Just eight three-year-old fillies have been nominated for this weekend’s Group 2 Silver Shadow Stakes (1200m) at Royal Randwick, however is shaping as the race of the day with several stand out performers of the 2014 autumn season set to appear.
Unlucky not to be carrying a perfect run of five race wins from as many starts into the 2014 Silver Shadow Stakes, trainer John O’Shea has nominated Earthquake for a racing return this weekend, marking the first occasion the new Godolphin trainer will saddle the filly competitively.
Debuting with an impressive victory in the Colin Pearce 100th Birthday Plate (1000m) in November, Earthquake returned in 2014 with a thumping three length victory in the Group 3 Blue Diamond Prelude F (1100m) on February 8th before breaking through for a maiden victory at the highest level of Australian racing when overcoming a wide and awkward barrier in the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) on February 22nd.
Continuing her perfect run with a comfortable win the Group 2 Reisling Stakes (1200m) on March 22nd, the Exceed And Excel filly put in a good fight but was unable to completely handle the heavy going of the Rosehill track during the major Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m); finishing second to Mossfun.
O’Shea and Godolphin are set to be offered twice the chance of success in the 2014 Silver Shadow Stakes, having also nominated talented filly Memorial.
Winning each of her first two starts during the closing stages of 2013, Memorial returned for second in the Listed Lonhro Plate (1100m) behind fellow Silver Shadow nominee Alpha Miss, and while disappointing when failing to beat a single runner home in the Reisling Stakes, returned to competitive form when placing a credible fifth in the Golden Slipper.
One of the fairy-tales of the Australian racing community since first appearing on course in late 2013, Alpha Miss was purchased for just $6000 and has already earned close to a quarter of a million dollars in prize money.
Winning the Listed Gimcrack Stakes (1000m) on debut on October 5th before repeating the dose in the Vein Plate three weeks later, Alpha Miss finished fourth to Mossfun in the Group 3 Widden Stakes (1100m) first-up this year before returning to the winner’s circle in the Lonhro Plate.
Running on for third in the Reisling Stakes on March 22nd, the Lucky Owners filly had clearly had enough by the time the Golden Slipper was run, but has reportedly taken well to her return to work.
Trainer Peter Moody is also set to launch a two-pronged attack on the 2014 Silver Shadow Stakes, nominated both Golden Slipper third Bring Me The Maid and exciting kiwi import Clover Lane.
Owned by the syndicate of Wylie Dalziel and the late, great Roy Higgins, Bring Me The Maid more than stamped her claims as one to watch when winning the Listed Sports 1000 (1000m) on debut before finishing an unlucky third in the Listed St Albans Stakes (1200m) on March 14th; securing without doubt her most impressive victory to date in the Group 2 Magic Night Stakes (1200m) just a week before the Golden Slipper.
Beating a talented field to the line which included subsequent Quezette Stakes champion Sabatini in the First Light Racing Bonus Maiden (1000m) on debut in July, Clover Lane will contest her first metropolitan race this weekend should she accept into the final field for the 2014 Silver Shadow Stakes, having finished third in Bendigo in her only other race start to date on August 13th.
Trainer Gai Waterhouse has nominated Twirl and Nayeli for the 2014 Silver Shadow Stakes, who are poised to be joined by Lee Curtis-trained Press Report at Randwick this weekend.
A final field and barrier draw for the 2014 Silver Shadow Stakes is due to be released on Wednesday morning.
