Earthquake No Certainty for 2014 Silver Shadow Stakes

August 19th, 2014

Arguably the standout performer over major two-year-old events through the 2014 Autumn Racing Carnival, Godolphin trainer John O’Shea has revealed exciting filly Earthquake will not make her racing return in this weekend’s Group 2 Silver Shadow Stakes (1200m) unless the Royal Randwick track improves over the coming days.

More than stamping her claims as one to watch through the major three-year-old events of the 2014 Spring Racing Carnival over her debut preparation in autumn, Earthquake is unlucky not to be carrying a perfect record of five race wins from as many starts into her approaching campaign, having been beaten by Mossfun by half a length in the Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) last time out on April 5th.

Outlining the likes of the Group 1 Flight Stakes (1600m) at Randwick on October 4th and Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) at Caulfield on October 11th as likely to figure as the Exceed And Excel filly’s major targets this time in, O’Shea said he has been thrilled with the way Earthquake has worked this week, but will not risk her on a less-than firm surface first-up.

”She worked sensationally this morning, so she’s ready to go, but I don’t want to give her a gut-buster on a ‘heavy 10’ first-up, she’s got a long preparation ahead of her,” O’Shea told TVN.

“We’ll wait until Saturday morning and see how the track comes up before making any decision, but if it’s heavy she won’t run.”

Making her presence felt immediately when charging home to win the Colin Pearce 100th Birthday Plate (1000m) by close to three lengths on debut, Earthquake secured status as a leading broodmare prospect when winning the Group 3 Blue Diamond Prelude (1100m) on February 8th; repeating the dose in the featured Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) a fortnight later.

Continuing her impressive run of form through the Group 2 Reisling Stakes (1200m) on March 22nd, Earthquake was unable to completely handle the heavy going of the soaked Randwick track during the Golden Slipper, however still managed to hold on for a credible second.
