2014 Silver Shadow Stakes Final Field and Barrier Draw

August 20th, 2014

Just nine three-year-old fillies have been confirmed to line up for this weekend’s Group 2 Silver Shadow Stakes (1200m) at Royal Randwick; highlighted by several of the 2014 Autumn Carnival’s leading two-year-olds.

Arguably the age group’s standout performer thus far, trainer John O’Shea has accepted a position in the final field of the Silver Shadow Stakes for talented filly Earthquake.

Charging home to win the Colin Pearce 100th Birthday Plate (1000m) on debut in November, Earthquake more than stamped her authority upon returning to the track this year, winning the Group 3 Blue Diamond Prelude (1100m) first-up before breaking through for a maiden victory at the highest level of Australian racing in the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m); commendably overcoming the wide and awkward barrier 15.

Continuing her perfect career start through the Group 2 Reisling Stakes (1200m) on March 22nd, the Exceed And Excel filly was unable to completely overcome the soaked Rosehill track during the Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) last time out on April 5th; suffering her first competitive defeat at the hands of Mossfun.

Allocated the ideal barrier 2, O’Shea, who will also saddle Memorial in the Silver Shadow Stakes, revealed he will not run Earthquake in the 2014 Silver Shadow Stakes unless the Randwick surface dries out significantly over the coming days.

Displaying a keen turn of foot to run on from the rear of the field and finish third in the Golden Slipper, trainer Peter Moody has confirmed Bring Me The Maid for a first-up appearance in the 2014 Silver Shadow Stakes.

Stamping her claims as one to watch when winning the Listed Sports 1000 (1000m) on debut, Bring Me The Maid was unlucky to be blocked for a run in the final straight and third in the Listed St Albans Stakes (1200m) on March 14th, but responded in the best way possible in winning the Group 2 Magic Night Stakes (1200m) just one week before the Golden Slipper.

Likely to receive the run of the race from barrier 3, jockey Luke Nolen has been confirmed to partner the Sebring filly for the first time competitively in the Silver Shadow Stakes; replacing previous jockey Chad Schofield.

One of the 2014 two-year-old crop’s fairy-tale stories, Alpha Miss was purchased for just $6000, but has already earned her connections close to a quarter of a million dollars.

Debuting with two impressive victories back-to-back in the late stages of 2013 including the Listed Gimcrack Stakes (1000m), Alpha Miss finishing fourth in the Group 3 Widden Stakes (1100m) first-up this year before returning to the winner’s circle in the Listed Lonhro Plate (1100m) on March 8th.

Arguably securing her best result to date when third to Earthquake and Mossfun in the Reisling Stakes, the Lucky Owners filly has not been seen at the races since failing to fire in the Golden Slipper.

Trainer Gai Waterhouse is set to launch a two-pronged attack on the 2014 Silver Shadow Stakes, having accepted positions in the final field for classy pair Nayeli and Twirl.

Winning each of her first two racing starts including the Group 3 Chairman’s Stakes (1100m) on February 1st, Nayeli was disappointing in her first-up run in the Listed Rosebud (1200m) two weeks ago, beating just one runner home.

Allocated barrier 1, Waterhouse is confident the More Than Ready filly will be far better for the run, and is expecting a top three finish.

Finishing second to Lady Sharapova in a minor event over 1250m at Canterbury two weeks ago, Twirl is yet to break through for a maiden race win, but has finished outside the places just once in five competitive starts.
