Eight three-year-old fillies have been included in nominations for Saturday’s Group 2 Silver Shadow Stakes (1200m) at Royal Randwick; highlighted by the pending appearance of some of the Spring Carnival’s most exciting racing prospects.
Lake Geneva was a strong and consistent performer for Team Hawkes through the recent Sydney Autumn Carnival and has been included in 2015 Silver Shadow Stakes nominations.
Yet to finish outside the first three in five career starts, Lake Geneva debuted to racing for a close second in the Group 3 Widden Stakes (1100m) on January 31st; progressing to third in the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) before producing undoubtedly her best performance to date for third in the Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m).
Having returned to the paddock after again finishing third in the Group 3 Percy Sykes Stakes (1200m) on April 11th, the Fastnet Rock filly returned for a comfortable maiden win in the Sigma 3.y.o Plate (1000m) on August 6th and should carry great condition into Saturday’s black type.
Claiming one win and three minors through five competitive starts, Fireworks placed second in the Entertainment Grounds Maiden (1000m) on debut in late December; progressing to third in a Randwick minor over 1100m before taking out the Widden Stakes.
Running a close third in the Group 2 Reisling Stakes (1200m) on March seventh, the Snitzel filly has not been seen at the races since failing to fire and 13th in the Golden Slipper.
Gai Waterhouse is set to launch a two-pronged attack in the Group 2 race on Saturday after including both Kimberley Star and Speak Fondly in Silver Shadow Stakes nominations.
Finishing outside the first three once in seven starts, Kimberley Star returned this time for fourth in the Australian Jeweller’s Liquidators Plate (1100m) on June 6th and third in the McGrath Estate Agents Maiden (1100m), and has since won her three most recent starts with complete ease.
Stamping her claims as one to watch when third in the Listed Gimcrack Stakes (1000m) in October, Speak Fondly returned this year for second in the Group 2 Sweet Embrace Stakes (1200m) and success in the Group 2 Magic Night Stakes (1200m), but also failed to figure in the Golden Slipper.
John O’Shea and Godolphin Australia are spoiled for choice with the talented three-year-olds they have in work ahead of the 2015 Spring Carnival, and are set to be represented by Italy in the 2015 Silver Shadow Stakes.
Posting several commendable results through autumn, the Domesday filly won a Canterbury minor over 1100m first-up and placed fifth in the Sweet Embrace Stakes before boxing on for third in the Magic Night Stakes most notably.
The 2015 Silver Shadow Stakes final field and barrier draw is due to be completed and released by midday, Wednesday.
