Eleven fillies have been confirmed in the final field for Saturday’s 2016 Group 2 Silver Shadow Stakes (1200m) at Royal Randwick; highlighted by the inclusion of some of the Spring Racing Carnival’s most exciting prospects.
Godolphin filly Calliope has not been seen at the races since she failed to fire in the Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) in March, but she is set for a competitive return on Saturday after being confirmed in the Silver Shadow Stakes field.
Debuting to racing for an impressive win in the Listed Gimcrack Stakes (1000m) at Randwick in October last year, Calliope resumed this year for a credible fifth in the Group 2 Blue Diamond Prelude F (1100m) in Victoria on February 13th.
Undoubtedly at her best when she beat a classy field to the line in the Group 2 Magic Night Stakes (1200m) a week prior to the Golden Slipper, the Exceed And Excel filly has trialled well leading into her spring return and will leave from the ideal barrier 7 in the Silver Shadow Stakes.
Omei Sword is another runner that has not been seen at the races since autumn, whom has also been confirmed in the 2016 Silver Shadow Stakes field.
Debuting to racing for success in the Peter Svendsen Maiden (1100m) on February 24th, Omei Sword produced a smart effort to run second behind Calliope in the Magic Night Stakes in only her second career start.
Returning to the paddock after finishing ninth in the Group 1 ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) on Day 1 of The Championships, the High Chaparral filly is drawn ideally in barrier 5 but may require a run to find peak condition.
A horse that is likely to have a fitness edge on her rivals is Quick Feet, who has been confirmed for a second-up run this time in the 2016 Silver Shadow Stakes field.
Quick Feet immediately stamped herself as a filly to follow upon debuting to racing for success in the Gsssa Winners Maiden Plate (1000m) on November 25th, but clearly needed the run when resuming this year for seventh in the Blue Diamond Prelude F.
Responding particularly well for second in the Group 2 Reisling Stakes (1200m) on March 5th, the Northern Meteor filly returned to the paddock after placing ninth in the Golden Slipper, and resumed this time for fifth in the Listed The Rosebud (1200m) two weeks ago.
